Immersive English Learning Environment
At HHCKLA Buddhist Leung Chik Wai College, we are committed to fostering an immersive English learning environment that empowers students to become confident, effective, and articulate communicators. Our comprehensive curriculum and diverse range of activities are designed to ignite a passion for the English language and prepare students for a globalised world.
Our Vision and Aims
The English Panel is dedicated to providing every student with opportunities to:
extend their knowledge and experience of other cultures.
foster personal and intellectual development for further studies, pleasure, and future careers in the English medium.
equip students with the skills to meet the changing socio-economic demands of the information age, including the interpretation, use, and production of English materials.
Catering for Every Learner
We firmly believe in nurturing the potential of every student. To cater for learner diversity and provide targeted support, we implement a split-class system across all forms:
Form 1: 6 groups
Form 2: 5 groups
Form 3: 5 groups
Form 4: 6 groups
Form 5: 6 groups
Form 6: 5 groups
This structure allows us to better address the individual needs of both high achievers and late bloomers, ensuring every student can thrive.
Our Native-Speaking English Teacher (NET)
Our NET plays a vital role in creating an authentic language environment. All Secondary 1 to 3 students have at least one lesson per week with our NET, who is responsible for:
- building student confidence in spoken English,
- developing innovative teaching materials and activities, and
- promoting professional collaboration and development among our English teaching team.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
We believe the world is our classroom. We actively create opportunities for students to apply their skills in dynamic and real-world contexts:
- Inter-school collaborations: Speaking practice sessions with peers from other schools.
- Competitive platforms: Dedicated training for the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) Debating Competition.
- The Exposure File: This unique school-based assignment broadens students’ horizons through newspaper clippings, reader-based activities, grammar exercises, vocabulary building, and mini-projects, encouraging meaningful daily engagement with the language.
Cultivating Appreciation through Language Arts
To cultivate a deeper appreciation for literature, we integrate an English classic into our curriculum each year. For the 2025-2026 school year, students across Forms 1-5 will explore different adaptations of Charles Dickens’ timeless tale, A Christmas Carol. This approach allows students to appreciate the beauty of literature while exploring universal themes of redemption, compassion, and social responsibility.
A Dynamic Calendar of English Activities
We bring English to life through major annual events that combine fun, creativity, and deep learning.
English Speaking Days 2024-2025
Our campus transformed into a vibrant English playground with 12 engaging game booths! Highlights included ‘Rhyme Rangers,’ ‘Who Am I?’, and the challenging ‘Timeless Tongue Twisters.’ These activities were thoughtfully designed to incorporate important themes like National Security Education, ensuring students learned valuable lessons in an enjoyable and interactive environment.
English Week 2024-2025: Romeo and Juliet
Our school was captivated by the world of William Shakespeare during a thrilling English Week. The week featured:
- an inter-class Kahoot quiz,
- a film appreciation session of the modern adaptation Romeo+Juliet, followed by a stimulating discussion on themes of love, fate, and conflict, and
- a culminating, highly interactive performance by Dove Tales Theatre, which brought the classic story to life with energy and clarity.
Celebrating Excellence
We are incredibly proud of outstanding achievements of our students, a testament to their hard work and talent.
